Ruahine Ride Flyer
A very amusing story from Lois Hosking Once upon a time back in the 70s a group of us got together and formed the Waiuku Endurance Riding Club. We ran one ride a year for those first years and gradually built our membership up to form a fun bunch of people who all liked doing this sport. A couple of those people were Ted and Cole who were good buddies. Their pet name for each other was 'You Dirty Rat'. They were funny.
Anyway this 'dirty rat' thing became a bit of a club joke and we instigated a 'Dirty Rat' column in our newsletter. Everytime someone did something dumb he/she became a member of this 'Dirty Rat Club' and we printed it in the newsletter. We even had a motto for it - "To cross the line first is everything - Qualifying is a bonus!" This was before helmets were compulsory and we just wore caps if anything. We used to turn the cap around - and Race!. A lot of fun times! We even had a t-shirt for our racing team.  Eventually the two leading dirty rats had a falling out over some stupid thing and the wole concept just didn't seem funny any more - but it was heaps of fun along the way!
I found this in the archives:    To join the 'Dirty Rat Racing Team' you must have achieved at least one of the goals listed below -
9 commandments of 'Rat Racing' 1989
1.    Fall, or get thrown off, before the start of the ride.   2.    Fall off more than twice in one ride.   3.    Forget to put saddle blanket on when gearing up.   4.    Put bridle, girth or saddle on back to front.   5.    Get lost on the second loop around the same track.   6.    Fart loud and proud at prizegiving.   7.    Get so drunk the night before and have to vomit on the ride.   8.    Fall off racing for the line.   9.    Try to bribe the vet.   Good Racing!   Remember - to WIN is everything -  qualifying is a bonus  -  Jenny's ride fully qualified her for membership. She rode in the finest traditions of the club. There have been others this season too. Andrea Mason at Pukeatua (with Jenny and Rowena) missing a major part of the track - on the second loop, Andrea Moon falling off three times at the Waiuku ride - and there must be heaps more that I don't know about.    I wonder if we could instigate a column along these lines today? Would it go down well, or are we too staid these days? (it was fun going back through all our old newsletters).
Lois

How about members out there "ratting" on your mates and send us in some misdemeanours committed at some of the rides so we can add some more names to the "Rat Racing Club".
